Science meets art, night club becomes the gallery, audio becomes visual

Disparate disciplines combined

The projects aims to explore and challenge traditional ideologies pertaining to the disparity of the Arts & Sciences and the separation of distinct senses - the visual, and the aural using the gallery and night club as the setting.

Synaesthesia - a phenomenon that causes sensory crossovers, such as tasting colours or feeling sounds.

Synthesis - the combination of components or elements to form a connected whole.

Syneaesthesis explores combining different senses, but also different perspectives on understanding the world around us.

The project stemmed from the artist’s interest in applying his knowledge from studying Theoretical Physics to software engineering, attempting to code a 3D game from scratch, simulating physics allowing the player to fly around. Having been to numerous audio-visual music events by successful artists such as Max Cooper, Flying Lotus & Bjork, the visuals always seemed to lack a direct connection to music being played. The idea of coding a live audio-reactive visual project - Synaesthesis, was born. Fusing together his background in Art, Design, Architecture, Science and music in a project which attempts to explore how an extra dimension can be added to how we perceive sound.

Whether music, speech, even the noise of wind blowing, any audio triggers the behaviour of the visuals in real-time.

As ambitious and challenging as it is to code this without using a framework, this allows the artist to be free from any constraints dictated by these. Instead code becomes the paint brush, allowing the artist to push the boundaries and be constrained only by his vision and knowledge.
